When Disappointment Isn't the End of the Story

Woman looking forward with hope and resilience after disappointment

"When there's a big disappointment, we don't know if that's the end of the story — or the beginning of a great adventure." — Pema Chödrön

There are moments in life that feel like a full stop. A diagnosis. A divorce. A body that no longer responds the way it used to. A season where what once worked… suddenly doesn't.

In those moments, it's easy to assume something has gone wrong — that we've failed, fallen behind, or missed our chance. But what if nothing went wrong at all?

The Same Life — Two Very Different Paths

I've seen this again and again, both in my own life and in the women I coach. Two women can face the same hardship. One becomes smaller — tighter, more guarded, more afraid to hope again. The other becomes more honest, more discerning, more herself. The difference isn't strength or willpower. It's the relationship to what's happening.

Food, Fitness, and the First Identity Shift

Growing up, food was my happy place. Comfort. Celebration. Connection. Eventually, I found my way into fitness, health, and later, competitive bodybuilding. That chapter gave me confidence, structure, and a sense of identity. It also allowed me to help others walk through the same door. For a long time, that story worked. Until it didn't.

Perimenopause: When the Body Changes the Conversation

Perimenopause hit like a brick wall I didn't see coming. Energy dropped. Joints ached. Muscles tightened. Recovery took longer — sometimes felt impossible. The old rules no longer applied. And that can be terrifying when your identity has been built on discipline, movement, and physical capability.

This is where many women turn against their bodies. But this season isn't asking for punishment — it's asking for listening. What I now help women understand is this: Midlife isn't a loss of identity. It's a refinement of it.

Divorce, Death, and the Unraveling That Changes Everything

There are other moments that redefine you whether you're ready or not. Divorce was one of mine. I truly believed I would never marry again — not because I didn't believe in love, but because the cost felt too high. Grief can do that. It makes life feel smaller, safer, quieter.

And then there was loss. Deep loss. The kind that rearranges your priorities and strips away what no longer matters. In those moments, yoga philosophy wasn't abstract for me — it was survival. It offered context when life felt senseless, and steadiness when nothing else was solid.

Yoga Philosophy Isn't About Escaping Life — It's About Meeting It

In yoga philosophy — and in the Bhagavad Gita specifically — we're reminded that life will present challenges not to punish us, but to clarify us. We don't control what shows up. We choose how we meet it.

Hardship can become a smaller life… or it can become the moment you stop living on autopilot.

The Invitation Beneath the Disappointment

This is the work I now do with women navigating major transitions:

  • Menopause and identity shifts
  • Divorce and reinvention
  • Empty nesting and redefining purpose
  • Career changes that ask deeper questions

Not "How do I fix this?" But "Who am I becoming because of this?"

Sometimes the great adventure doesn't start with confidence or clarity. It starts with honesty. With admitting, This isn't working anymore.

And that admission? It's not the end of the story. It's often the beginning of a truer one.
